Comparative Essay

In every conceivable manner, the family is a link to our past, brigde to our future.

There is often a lack of communication between parents and their children in every family. Especially the fathers who always keep their strong figure as the head of the family and expressing love towards their children is usually implicit.

This concept of relationship is further explained by the two short stories, "A Gentleman's C" by Padgett Powell and "Humans of New York" by Brandon Stanton. The relationship between the father and child can be seen throughout the two texts. These two authors presented the same situation yet different consequences thus giving distinction to the both stories.

Padget Powell's "A Gentleman's C", the English professor or the son seems to have grown enough to become more independent and make decisions on his own. He was raised as his father being tougher on him and that made him who he is now. However, the father had become weak and lowly, probably due to his age.

Brandon Stanton's "Humans of New York " is the opposite of Padgett Powell's story, where the father is more superior and that the child is depending on him. The strictness of relationship was felt in the text thus leading some insights about what would happen eventually at the end of the story.

The two literary texts may have been different in their endings, but they share a lot of things. They both suffer from lack of communication with each other and even though they came from different economic and cultural backgrounds, both father tried their best to protect and provide the needs of their children.

Both literary texts helped us to remember many things. "Humans of New York" , having a more lively and light theme , also the reader could predict the ending.

"Don't hold a grudge , for one that is held for too long may come in devastating consequence and that is unhealthy" , a lesson that will reminds us of Padgett Powell's "A Gentleman's C".
